I will start the review with The Prestige.
"In the end of the Nineteenth Century, in London, Robert Angier, his beloved wife Julia McCullough and Alfred Borden are friends and assistants of a magician. When Julia accidentally dies during a performance, Robert blames Alfred for her death and they become enemies. Both become famous and rival magicians, sabotaging the performance of the other on the stage. When Alfred performs a successful trick, Robert becomes obsessed trying to disclose the secret of his competitor with tragic consequences. "
The movie is directed by Christopher Nolan. The number of good actors is really surprising in this film as well. The Prestige scores, Christian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson... and even a surprisingly good play by David Bowie as Nicola Tesla. As you can guess the story is about two competitive magicians. It would be a normal movie is they were only trying to copy each other with new tricks and stuff. However, there is so many elements added to this movie to make it interesting.
I don't want to make this a review containing spoilers because I see this movie as an experience and everyone should watch it and then get an opinion for themselves. Giving out any spoilers about The Prestige would be ridiculous. All I can say is you have to watch it! The last scene can really shock you when you figure out how some stuff worked in the movie!
I give it 8.5/10!
Tomorrow I will be doing a short review of The Illusionist and I will compare it to this movie.
How did you like the movie?
P.S. I will check all you posts a bit later! got some more stuff to do first =]
Never heard of this before but I'll check it out when I have the chance.
ReplyDeleteI have the DVD but I haven't watched it yet, I know I should! thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteChristian Bale, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson... With this cast you know it must be a great film, and for me, it really was
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen it, but it looks interesting.
ReplyDeleteThis movie was good, I've seen it twice. I like that you're comparing the two. I've seen them both but can't really remember the other, but I do recall them being similar.
ReplyDeleteThey are similar in theme and setting, but the mood and plot vary. With Nolan directing, it's a great film, but the edge still goes to The Illusionist.
ReplyDeleteI was genuinely surprised in a good way when I watched The Prestige. It has a very solid, unpredictable plot, and even a little bit of sci-fi in it.
ReplyDeleteTesla is a boss.
wow wow wow i didnt know this movie was that good. i will definitely watch it
ReplyDeleteSounds like a great movie! I'll check it out!
ReplyDeleteSeen this movie a year ago, Bale did a great performance and yeah, Tesla as the mad scientist and the cloning stuff was a great idea!
ReplyDeletegreat movie, i should re-watch it sometime soon.
ReplyDeleteLooks like an interesting flick.. Thanks for the no spoilers! Too many folks give too much away... >:o. Gonna give this film a shot. :)

This is in my top 10, I've seen it many times and enjoyed it every time. It's good to watch it twice. Without spoiling it, the second time you see it the film falls into place and you see all the things which tell you about the twists and turns that you didn't notice the first time round, rather like Fight Club. I defy anyone not to like this film!!!
ReplyDeleteIt knocks spots off of The Illusionist
Nothing is as it seems in this movie , so one has to watch it closely again and again.
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen this yet. Will have to remedy that.
ReplyDeleteI'll be sure to check it out, looks like it has some great actors in it.
ReplyDeletethanks for the first part. i will watch the movie later for sure
ReplyDeleteI think I'd give it an 8, kinda boring in some spots. Ending was a nice payoff though. Nice review!
ReplyDeleteThe prestige is quite a movie. I really liked all the dialogues and Tesla-David Bowie, he kinda suited tht role.Twist and story like is awesome evenwithout the bigplayers like Christian Bale, and Hugh this woul hve definitely be a movie of alltime.

ReplyDeleteThe Prestige is one of my favourite films, though i am a bit biased considering i find everything Chris Nolan does incredible, but i would pick this over The Illusionist.
ReplyDeleteGreat movie. Christian Bale was incredible in it.
ReplyDeleteNolan has successfully infused something unique to magician film as he himself is the magician of filmmaking. I completely agree with your review.
ReplyDeleteI liked this movie especially the ending!
