Today I'll be doing The Illusionist.
plot:
"A young boy falls in love with a girl that is way above his social standards along with the art of magic. Although the parents forbid them of seeing each other they cannot be split apart. Until one day they were found together and the boy was sent off. He became a magician and traveled the world. She fell in love with another man, the Crown Prince. The two got engaged but the boy, Eisenheim, finally meets back up with the girl and uses his powers to free her from the royal house in Vienna."
Directed by Neil Burger, this movie is a quite well told story involving mystery and magic. Somewhat in the movie it practically intrigues the audience and if not hypnotizes. Similar to The Prestige it has quite good actors. Maybe a bit less than it but still quite good. Edward Norton, Jessica Biel and especially Paul Giamatti do a great job portraying there actors.
Paul Giamatti |
I'll cite an interesting comment from a writter for The Guadian named Peter Bradshaw:
"In its unassuming way, the film shows that reality is more mystifying than illusion."
In the end, even though The Illusionist might contain some qualities The Prestige doesn't have, I still think that the second mentioned is better. The prestige is my choice out of these two. However similar they might be, in the same way they are different. What is your choice?
P.S. I have given up on morning coffee(HELL NO when it comes to real coffee, HELL YES when it comes to the firefox addon), When i press the magical button it opens 165 tabs and raised all my quad core threads to 70% and ram usage to 3.4GB. It's just a mess and too much to do at once. Ill just return back to the feed and commenting on who comments me =]
I liked prestige more than illusionist though more are magician stories with unexpected twist. Illusionist was taken pretty well and every magic act was quite different and pretty mindblowing. Orange tree?
ReplyDeleteMovie not to be missed ;)
Biel definitely didn't fit this kind of role, while Rufus really was amazing as always. I generally didn't like the way they portrayed these parts of the world in the film. Norton is interesting as usually.
ReplyDeleteGreat film, might just re-watch it again tonight
ReplyDeleteIllusionist gets the edge for me. The two main characters in the Prestige were each despicable in their own fashion, which made the film darker. And the love story here was actually quite sweet.
ReplyDeleteHow do these people grow perfect mustaches? I probably spent 90% of that youtube clip thinking about :P Also this movie looks pretty good like a dark mystery, gonna have to go check it out.
